The beginning of March brings Poland violent weather contrasts that threaten crops and hydrological safety. While thaws leading to local flooding are ongoing in the north of the country, forecasters predict an exceptionally warm March with temperatures reaching up to 20 degrees Celsius. The situation is worsened by the appearance of pests in rapeseed crops and difficulties in spring nitrogen fertilization caused by excessive soil moisture.

Eastern sky blockade

From March 10, flight restrictions in the border zone will come into force, aiming to ensure operational freedom for the military.

River alarms

Exceeded alarm levels on six rivers are forcing hydrotechnical service interventions in northern Poland.

Crisis in agriculture

Flooded fields prevent machinery from entering, realistically threatening the sowing deadlines for spring cereals and the condition of rapeseed.

Sudden frost

One of the driest Marches is in the making, but preceded by a wave of frosts that could destroy premature plant vegetation.

Poland is currently grappling with an extremely complex meteorological situation, combining the effects of rapid thaws and a forecasted return of freezing weather. Data from IMGW indicates that alarm levels have been exceeded on several rivers, including in Mazovia and Lower Silesia, forcing services to monitor flood embankments and carry out local interventions. The hydrological situation remains tense mainly due to thaws and high water levels in the Vistula and Oder river basins. A particularly critical situation prevails in the Vistula Fens, where experts are calling for billion-dollar investments in infrastructure, warning that a breach of the levees could lead to the flooding of the entire region. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector faces the specter of further financial losses. Excessive field moisture prevents heavy machinery from entering, halting crucial spring nitrogen fertilization and the sowing of spring cereals. Farmers warn that rapeseed and winter wheat could suffer not only from waterlogging but also from sudden temperature drops. Paradoxically, despite the moisture, experts are forecasting shortages of spring wheat on the seed market and recommend quick purchases. An additional risk factor is the appearance of the cabbage stem weevil, which has awakened due to temporary warm spells, forcing the installation of yellow traps to monitor the population. The winter of 2025/2026 has gone down in the history of Polish meteorology as a period of extreme contrasts, combining a record-warm December with the driest January of the current century, which destabilizes natural vegetation cycles. Long-term forecasts for March are not optimistic, predicting so-called "weather mix-ups." Although the first crocuses have been spotted in the Tatra Mountains, heralding the arrival of early spring, forecasters warn of a "strong tongue of frost" that could freeze roads and dash hopes for an early start to field work. Forest services are also noting the earlier awakening of wild animals, a signal of ecosystem destabilization due to weather variability.
